The timber

Treated softwood, mostly

Most kits are pressure-treated softwood. Mid Ulster's care note for its pressure-treated corner pergola says not to apply any treatment for the first 6 months, while the excess moisture from the treatment dries out, or the warranty is void; after that, an annual treatment prolongs its life and look.

  • Posts set on metal post shoes or pads, not buried bare in soil.
  • Rafters with a slope or gap so water runs off.
  • Climbers trained on wires, not nailed to the timber.

Built or kit

A kit or built to size

A kit is a stock size and you, or a fitter, put it up. A carpenter-built pergola is made for the space: posts where the patio allows, a span to suit, and timber chosen for the job. It costs more and fits better. Ask for the timber, the post size, how the posts are fixed and the finish in the written price.
