With a roof

A pergola with a roof

A roof is what makes a pergola work in Irish weather. Louvred roofs tilt open and closed, from €1,075 as a steel kit and €1,885.99 in aluminium; a motorised retractable roof is €7,420 for 3 m × 4 m (Royale Stones).

Sides

A roof and sides

Zip screens and blinds on one or more sides give shelter from the wind: €265 for a 3 m screen on the steel pergola, €407.99 on the Carlisle (Royale Stones), €488.95 for a 3 m mesh blind on the Como (Mid Ulster). Royce Cube's 4 m × 3 m version comes with three privacy screens at €4,710.95 (Mid Ulster).

Glass sliding panels on all sides turn it into something closer to a room, and that changes the planning question: see below.

Watertight?

Rain-proof or shower resistant

Not every louvred roof is sold as watertight. Mid Ulster describes the Como's louvred panels as shower resistant. Ask what happens to the water: on most louvred roofs it runs along the blades to gutters in the frame and down the posts. Ask where it goes after that.

Planning

Roofs and the rules

A pergola with a roof is still a garden structure under Class 3: 3 m high, or 4 m with a tiled or slated pitched roof, and within the 30 m² total (S.I. 338 of 2026). Enclosed with glass and used as a room, it's no longer a pergola, and the extension rules are the ones to check with the council.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can a pergola have a solid roof?

Yes. It's then closer to a canopy or a covered patio; the planning height is still 3 m unless the roof is tiled or slated and pitched.

What does a pergola with a roof cost?

From €1,075 for a 3 m × 3 m steel louvred kit to €7,420 for a motorised retractable one (Royale Stones); fitted aluminium from €2,500 (Superior Pergola Ireland).

Is a louvred roof waterproof?

Some are sold as watertight, some as shower resistant (Mid Ulster). Check the maker's words.
